This article is the first in a currently 13-part series about the “kill-the-gays” bill before Uganda’s Parliament (there may be more as the legislation actually moves through the Ugandan Parliament). Since the story has received relatively little coverage, I decided to post it on my blog. It is under the “Human Rights” category and I’ll add links back and forward as articles post. Just because it isn’t in a lot of news doesn’t make it small news. This issue is really big news and a huge potential human rights disaster.
In late November of 2009, The Rachel Maddow Show reported a story that is sickeningly unconscionable. Why? It’s made right here in America by very conservative Senators and Congressmen who are members of “The Family” and Evangelical Christian ministries, such as Rick Warren.
The Ugandan Parliament is debating a bill, which may become law, that will criminalize being gay significantly more than it is now criminalized in that country. Punishment for being gay will be up to life imprisonment or the death penalty. Anyone who knows of a gay person and doesn’t report them would be subject to three years imprisonment. Being gay would be elevated to an extraditable offense. Ugandan citizens known to be gay and living in other countries would not be safe from their country’s draconian laws if the country in which they live is willing to extradite people for being gay.

If you are not familiar with The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, you need to be. They are a secret organization of leaders in America and other parts of the world who have a very distorted view of real power in politics. They are taught that the outside world’s rules don’t apply to them; that they are above the law and have their own set of distorted values that put The Family first and their own families and government positions second, third, etc.
If you haven’t read Jeff Sharlet’s book, it is a must-read. It scared the pants off me. I used to think secret centers of power, like the Illuminati, was a cool idea. Now that I know such an organization exists, it makes me consider that the future of the U.S. isn’t in the enforcement of the Constitution and our laws. It may be in the hands of a secret organizations whose motives and actions are mostly unknown.

Hi Sherri, I don’t understand what you’re getting at. What has this bill in Uganda got to do with the US?
It’s in the second paragraph, and watch the video. Also, read the rest of the series published so far.
Evangelical pastors neck-deep in Ugandan politics are responsible for stoking the already severely anti-gay mindset in that country and in Africa in general. The Family is directly connected to Ugandan leaders. Ugandan leaders are members of The Family, and that organization has a huge amount of influence over its members.
Rick Warren calls Uganda “a Purpose Driven Nation”. He’s the author of “Purpose Driven Life” and was extremely vocal in supporting Proposition 8 in California.
In the next posts, there are a lot more details about just how much Americans of influence are involved in the drafting and debate of this bill before the Ugandan Parliament. The real involvement comes from people like Scott Lively, Caleb Lee Brundidge, and others in the “cure the gays” snake oil industry. Scott Lively is particularly intolerant. Please keep reading and watching the videos and you’ll see how America is involved as the story unfolds. We’re involved so much that there will be blood on American hands if this bill becomes law in Uganda.
